It’s a truth universally acknowledged that you probably shouldn’t break up with your boyfriend the week before you’re scheduled to travel the world with him. So I didn’t.
I’ll go out on a limb and say it was his fault, but not for any fault of his. He was too good. Too kind and too loving and I wasn’t living up to it. Was that stupid of me? Maybe. I loved him and he loved me and I just couldn’t love him enough. It had to end somehow, but it couldn’t end now.
Or any time in the next fifteen months.
Brandon and I were eighteen and had been dating for six years. Our parents had grudgingly allowed us to go on the same trip together- albeit with two other friends of ours.
We were leaving in one week. I could not screw this up.
I lay, sprawled on my back atop his bed, door wide open (of course) as he read aloud from my Stats textbook. His voice was white noise, and when he stopped- obviously waiting for my answer- I shrugged. “I stopped paying attention fifteen minutes ago, Bran.”
“I wish…” he trailed off. “I wish we were on the trip already. I wish we didn’t have to be so careful.”
I rolled onto my stomach, darting a quick glance out to the hallway to double-check that his mom was still downstairs. “You think we’re going to get that much alone time while we’re abroad?”
Brandon sat up, leaning against his bookcase and gazing at me. “I think we’re going to be able to make the trip whatever we want it to be.” He leaned forward onto his hands and knees, crawling forward until he could pull himself onto the bed next to me. “Whether we go out and explore, or stay in and…” He flushed, bravado temporarily leaving him. “…do other things. We get to decide.” His hand found mine, and I found it in me to squeeze back.
I didn’t want to break up with him. I didn’t want to end this. And I knew- I knew I was being stupid, but at the moment, it didn’t feel like I had a choice.
Quick note: the featured images on my writing portfolio posts have little to nothing to do with the excerpt. The way that they formatted, however, was a bit nicer than they were without any pictures! I’m going to hopefully replace them with more pertinent images in the future, but this may take some time as I am using my own material.
